The Basics of Worldbuilding

Introduction

Creating a unique fantasy world is no easy feat. It requires a deep understanding of the world-building process and a willingness to delve into the minutiae of each aspect of the world. In this article, we will explore some of the key elements that can help you create a unique fantasy environment.

Environment

The environment of a fantasy world holds immense significance in shaping your narrative. As a writer, it is crucial to delve into the diverse realms of environments that can breathe life into your imaginary world. Consider the climate or climates within your world. Your world might be enveloped in scorching heat, with blazing sunrays illuminating a parched and desolate landscape. Or it could be a realm of eternal frost, where icy winds whisper through snow-laden forests. Perhaps there are floating islands with waterfalls cascading down into nothingness. There could be acid rain, eternal night (The Night Lands), creatures that control the weather, weird grass that burrows into stone when the wind blows (The Stormlight Archives), etc. Think about what makes your world unique in terms of the weather.

Flora and Fauna

The flora and fauna of your fantasy world are closely tied to its environment. Consider the plants and animals that thrive in the climate you have chosen. Are there exotic creatures that are unique to your world? Perhaps there are plants that have magical properties or animals that can speak. By creating a diverse range of flora and fauna, you can add depth and variety to your world. You could have plants that walk (The Black Company), talking animals (Redwall, The Hobbit, Narnia), giant rune bears or dragons (Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Earthsea), or any number of interesting critters.

Cultures

When building your fantasy world, don't forget to weave a tapestry of unique and diverse cultures. Cultures are the vibrant threads that add depth, richness, and complexity to your world-building endeavors. Careful development of these elements, with consideration for their histories, traditions, and customs, can truly bring your world to life.

Start by pondering the distinctive languages spoken by each culture. Language shapes the way people communicate, think, and perceive the world around them. Craft unique linguistic elements, such as phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary, to differentiate one culture from another. This linguistic diversity will lend authenticity and flavor to your world. Note: you do not want to litter your story with unpronounceable words, so keep these to a minimum.

Delve into the visual aspects of culture. Explore the clothing styles that adorn the inhabitants of your world. Are they elaborate and ornate, or practical and utilitarian? What colours are important to these people. What symbolism do different aspects of dress hold? Consider the architecture that shapes their cities and villages, reflecting their values, resources, and societal structures. From grand castles to humble huts, each structure tells a story. Art, too, can serve as a window into a culture's soul. Is their art vibrant and abstract, or meticulous and traditional? What kind of musical instruments do they use? These visual and auditory cues will enhance the sensory experience of your readers and transport them into the heart of your world.

Remember, cultures are not static entities. They evolve over time, shaped by historical events, intercultural interactions, and the passage of generations. Embrace the dynamism of cultural development, allowing your world's cultures to grow and change organically. By interweaving various cultures, you can foster interactions, conflicts, and alliances that propel your narrative forward.

Embrace the diversity of cultures within your world-building. Develop them with care, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail. Make them stand out from the humdrum pseudo-European mishmash that so many fantasy novels adopt. Make something different. In doing so, you will create a world that is vibrant, immersive, and unforgettable.

Religions and Belief Systems

Let's dive into the realm of religions and belief systems within your story. Religion and beliefs are foundational to every single culture that ever existed on earth. These elements hold profound significance, shaping the fabric of your world and the lives of its inhabitants. Delve into the pantheon of gods or deities worshipped by your characters, each with their own powers, domains, and followers. Consider the atheists and agnostics of your story and how they might react to the other beliefs present in the story. Explore the myths and legends that have been whispered through generations, the ghost stories and the happy traditions.

Consider the profound impact of these beliefs on your characters and their interactions. Religious differences can spark conflicts, ignite tensions, or foster unexpected alliances. Characters may find solace, guidance, or purpose in their faith, while others may question or reject the established dogmas. Explore the rituals, ceremonies, and practices that accompany these belief systems, providing glimpses into the inner workings of your world's cultures. Even if you have them only as a background element to the story, they add a lot of flavour that will make the world seem more three-dimensional.

Remember, religions can also reflect societal structures, moral codes, and philosophies. They can provide an exploration of existential questions, the nature of good and evil, or the balance of power. Allow your characters to grapple with their beliefs, to question, to doubt, or to find profound strength within them.

So don't overlook the depth and richness that religions and belief systems can bring to your world. Use them to colour your world and your story in new ways. My advice is to not get preachy, unless that is the entire premise of your novel and you make that clear to your readers. No one enjoys being lectured from a one-sided perspective.

Food

Food is an essential aspect of any culture, and can be a great way to add depth and richness to your world. Food and drink and the specific dishes created by the inhabitants of your world will always tie into religion, customs, the environment, and the economy. Consider the types of food that are eaten by the inhabitants of your world, as well as the cooking techniques and ingredients that are used. Perhaps there are rare or exotic ingredients that are highly sought after, or unique dishes that are only eaten during special occasions.

Economy

The economy of your fantasy world is closely tied to its cultures and geography. Consider the resources that are available in your world, and how they are traded and exchanged. Perhaps there are rare or valuable resources that are coveted by certain cultures, or items that are only available in certain regions. By developing a complex economy, you can add depth and realism to your world.

Pro-tip: Don’t call your unobtainable resource “unobtainium”. Looking at you, James Cameron (Avatar).

Building Types

The buildings and architecture of your world can help to bring it to life. Again, these will be inherently influenced by culture, environment, flora, religion, and the economy. Consider the types of buildings that are common in each culture, as well as the materials and construction techniques that are used. Perhaps there are unique styles of architecture that are only found in certain regions, or buildings that have been enchanted with magic. These are a great way to make a statement about hierarchies and government in your fantasy world.

Conclusion

In conclusion, creating a unique fantasy environment requires careful consideration of many different factors. By developing a deep understanding of the world-building process and taking the time to flesh out each aspect of your world, you can create a rich and immersive environment that will captivate readers and audiences alike. Remember to consider the environment, flora and fauna, cultures, religions and belief systems, food, economy, and building types in order to create a truly unique and unforgettable world.
